welcome

Welcome to the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center website. We hope that this site will serve both as an online educational resource and place for those working for peace and social justice to find out what’s happening in our community. Please browse our Calendar to find out what local events are coming up, and check out our action ideas to get involved.

We are always looking for volunteers and supporters, so please contact us if you'd like to get involved in the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center. Everyone is welcome.

Please check out what the peace center has been up in the past year by downloading our "2nd Annual Report to the Community," in WORD format.

background

The Whatcom Peace & Justice Center was founded in 2002 by a group of local residents committed to putting our money where our mouths are in support of peace and justice activism. With nearly 50% of our federal income tax dollars spent on military-related expenditures, we felt the need to create a space to further our vision of another world that affirms peace, nonviolence, and socio-economic justice. Initially, the center operated under the wing of Bellingham Friends Meeting (Quakers), one of the world's traditional peace churches. It is a 501(c)3 tax-exmpt, non-profit organization goverened by a volunteer Board of Directors.

The Center is supported by the financial gifts and talents of over 500 county residents, businesses, faith communities and other local organizations. Join us in raising our voice for peace and justice!

mission and goals

It is the mission of the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center to create an active, inclusive, community voice for peace and social justice in Whatcom County through partnerships with local religious and community organizations, education on alternatives to violence and war, and actions to promote lasting peace and justice both at home and abroad.

Goals

1. Energize the peacemaking, nonviolence, and social justice efforts of individuals, local religious and community groups to broaden and strengthen our impact.

2. Increase community members’ awareness of alternatives to war, violence, and militarism. Promote understanding about economic injustice created by personal, corporate, and governmental choices.

3. Monitor and promote programs and policies for social justice, lasting peace and nonviolence both at home and abroad.
