OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

THIS Friday, September 30: Hungry for Healthcare Spaghetti Dinner. $5.00 donation. Fundraiser for United for National Health Care, a Bellingham Coalition working to build a grassroots movement to win health care for all. 5:30-7:30 PM at Brigid Collins House, 1231 Garden Street. THIS Saturday, October 1: Vigil for Peace and Freedom 2:00-8:00 PM. Join community folk from Whatcom County, U.S. and British Columbia, Canada in united opposition to the presence of the Minuteman Project and armed vigilantes on our common border. We will join together at the International Peace Arch in Blaine, WA. You are invited to bring a personal symbol of peace, community and solidarity to place at our Altar under the Peace Arch. Poetry and music are welcome! The format of the event will be free-flowing so there are no scheduled speakers or musical events, though we will have a PA system. We urge people to bring their own snacks, water, lawn chairs, picnics, blankets, and whatever you need to be comfortable. For more information call (360) 756-2330. October 1: Sustainable Bellingham presents a film showing and discussion of WE BECOME SILENT 7:30 to 10:00 PM at the Community Food Co-op Connections Building on the corner of Forest and Chestnut. (The Co-op requests parking on street or alternative transportation.) This astounding video exposes the grave dangers posed by European and global regulation of medical freedom. Please encourage your friends and family to view this video and participate in maintaining our health freedoms. Guest speaker: John Hammell from Pt. October 5: Andrew Mack, Director of UBC's Human Security Centre and former Director of Strategic Planning in the Executive Office of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will analyse the forces driving the decline and explain the critical role played by the United Nations. October 6: Women's Art Therapy and Potluck 6:00-8:30 PM in the YWCA Ballroom. The Connection: A Women's Space is offering a women's art therapy workshop. Join us to explore ourselves in a safe, fun and creative environment. (Note: this is also a potluck event, children are welcome). Contact Cat Zavis at 820-9955.


October 7 and the first Friday of every month: Meditation for Peace. 5:30-6:00 p.m., Bellingham Dharma Hall, 1101 N. State Street, third floor (corner of N. State and Maple). October 8: Alternatives to Military Service tabling orientation at the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center 10:00-12:00. Call 734-0217 to reserve a space if you would like to volunteer to table once a semester in the local high schools giving students information on alternatives to joining the military.

October 8: Indigenous People's Day March and Rally, with support for Leonard Pelitier and all Political Prisoners. Hosted by The American Indian Movement of Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, Bellingham, and Vancouver, B.C. March to the Peace Arch leaves from the Salishan Park in Blaine, WA (corner of Blaine/Alder) at 12:00 Noon. Rally at the Peace Arch begins at 1:00 PM. Open mic and Potluck and Raffle begins at 5:00 PM in the Park House.

Fridays, October 14, November 4, December 2: KIRTAN devotional singing.
As deeply resonant Sanskrit words are sung, in call and response and with musical accompaniment, joy is awakened and nurtured. 6:30-8:00 PM at Everybody's Yoga, 1609 Broadway and Elm, Suite B. October 28: Women's Grieving Circle 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the WECU Educational Center. Sponsored by The Connection: A Women's Space. This is an opportunity

BREAKING NEWS: Bellingham Peace Cranes Flying to Iraq! A Canadian Representative from Christian Peacemaker Teams has notified the Peace Center that he will take peace cranes made by Bellingham children to Iraq and give them to children. If you would like to make a peace crane for an Iraqi child, please stop by the Peace Center during our drop-in hours and make one: we will send them along at a ceremony on Wednesday, October 5th at 3:15 PM. Come join the Bellingham children as they send their peace cranes to Iraqi children!

Peace Zone gathers every Friday afternoon in front of the Federal Building at Cornwall and Magnolia from 4:00 5:00 PM. Join us afterwards for announcements and discussion at Port of Subs.

Action Alert of the Month
Call all members of the city and county councils and urge them to pass the Resolution that opposes minutemen/vigilante activity in Whatcom County. The Democrats have passed this resolution at the state level thanks to the work of Rosalinda Guillen, Sharon Monteiro, Debi Covert-Bowlds and other members of the Coaltion for Professional Law and Border Enforcement. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council opposes any effort to deputize, finance, or otherwise encourage the presence of self-appointed vigilante groups within the County who might take into their own hands the legal authority vested in our law enforcement officials and those of the federal and state governments, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council expresses once again its absolute commitment to a safe and secure environment where individual civil rights are respected by all.
